Blueberry Citrus Sweet Rolls

If spring and summer had an official sweet roll, this would be it.

These pillowy-soft rolls are swirled with a homemade blueberry citrus jam that's bursting with fresh blueberries and bright lemon + orange zest, then topped with the dreamiest browned butter cream cheese frosting. They're buttery, bright, and just the right amount of comfort—the kind of bake that makes your whole kitchen smell like your favorite little neighborhood bakery. The only difference? You don't have to wait in line, hope they haven't sold out, or convince yourself that one pastry is enough.
If you've never made (or eaten!) a sweet roll before, don't worry. Think cinnamon roll, but with a sunny seasonal twist. Instead of a cinnamon sugar filling, each layer is packed with jammy blueberry citrus goodness that bakes into the soft, buttery dough. The citrus keeps everything bright and fresh, while the blueberries become rich and jammy as they bake.

And then there's the frosting—a silky, browned butter cream cheese frosting that's just melty enough to seep into every swirl while the rolls are still warm. It's rich, nutty, perfectly tangy, and honestly one of my favorite frostings to keep in my back pocket. I use it on everything from banana bread cake and red velvet cupcakes to sugar cookies and layer cakes. If you're anything like me, you'll probably find yourself making an extra batch just to have an excuse to spread it on something else.

What I love most about these rolls is that they somehow feel both cozy and fresh at the same time. They're perfect for slow weekend mornings, summer brunches, a special Holiday, or bringing to a friend who could use something homemade. They also happen to taste suspiciously like lemon blueberry pancakes in sweet roll form, which, if you ask me, is reason enough to make them.
Just one piece of advice: don't expect leftovers. These have a habit of disappearing almost as quickly as they come out of the oven.
What do you need to make it?

Blueberries – We’re doubling down on the blueberries here. They flavor the dough and create that sweet, jammy filling.
Lemon + Orange – The citrus dream team. Orange brings a softer, sweeter citrus flavor, while lemon adds the tang and brightness these rolls need to balance the sweetness. Using both the zest and juice makes sure that citrus flavor comes through in every bite.
Bread Flour – Adds just enough structure to the dough while keeping those soft, fluffy, pull-apart layers we’re here for.
Butter – A sweet roll essential. And yes, we’re browning some for the frosting because regular butter simply wasn’t enough.
Cream Cheese – For a thick, tangy frosting, elevated with rich, nutty browned butter and a splash of citrus.
Tips from Court's Kitchen to yours:
Pick your blueberries with purpose. Fresh or frozen will work, but I like frozen blueberries for the reduction—they cook down beautifully and give you that deep blueberry flavor and gorgeous color. For the filling, I reach for fresh. They hold their shape a little better, leaving little bursts of blueberry tucked throughout the rolls.
A little sticky is a good thing. If your dough feels slightly tacky, resist the urge to keep reaching for the flour. That softer dough is exactly what helps give you those pillowy, tender rolls. Too much extra flour can leave them tougher and less fluffy, so trust the dough here. A little sticky now is worth it later.
Fresh citrus, always. This is one place where fresh really makes a difference. Use both the zest and juice—you want that citrus flavor showing up right alongside the blueberries, not hiding in the background.
Let that filling cool. As tempting as it is to get straight to rolling, give your blueberry filling time to cool completely. Warm filling can soften the butter in the dough and quickly turn rolling and slicing into a very messy situation. Cool filling makes the whole process much easier.
Brown your butter ahead of time. Do your future self a favor and brown the butter the day before. Let it chill in the fridge overnight, then bring it back to room temperature when you’re ready to make the frosting. All that rich, nutty browned-butter flavor, with one less thing to do on baking day.
If you're looking to make this ahead of time: after shaping the rolls, cover the pan tightly and refrigerate overnight. The next morning, let them sit at room temperature for about 45–60 minutes before baking. Fresh sweet rolls for breakfast without waking up at dawn? That's elevated baking without the morning workload.

INSTRUCTIONS
Step 1: Make the Blueberry Reduction
At first glance, this step might seem a little extra, but trust me—it's worth it. Simmering the blueberries first gives you two incredible ingredients from one saucepan. The naturally vibrant blueberry liquid gets mixed into the dough, adding subtle berry flavor (and the prettiest hint of color), while the softened blueberries cook down into a rich, jammy filling. Nothing goes to waste, and every part of the recipe is packed with blueberry goodness.
Could you skip this step? Absolutely.
But if you're here because you love blueberries as much as I do, I promise it's one of those little details that makes these sweet rolls feel extra special.
In a small saucepan, combine the frozen blueberries, water, and lemon juice. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, then reduce to a simmer and cook for 5–10 minutes, until the berries have completely burst and released all their juices. Strain the mixture, making sure to save both the liquid and the berries. You'll use the blueberry liquid in the dough and the berries to make the filling.
Note: Don't toss the berries after straining—they're packed with flavor and become the base of the jam filling.
Step 2: Make the Dough
Warm the milk until it's just warm to the touch. If using a thermometer, heat to no more than 110 degrees. If using active dry yeast, stir it into the warm milk and let it bloom for about 20 minutes. If you're using instant yeast, you can shorten this step to about 5 minutes.
Meanwhile, whisk together the bread flour, sugar, and salt.
Add the egg, vanilla, ½ cup of the reserved blueberry liquid from earlier, and the yeast mixture to the dry ingredients. Mix on low speed with a dough hook until a shaggy dough forms. With the mixer running, add the softened butter a few pieces at a time, allowing each addition to incorporate before adding more.
Continue kneading for about 10 minutes, until the dough is smooth, elastic, and passes the windowpane test*. Transfer the dough to a lightly buttered bowl, cover, and let rise until doubled in size, about 2 hours, depending on the temperature of your kitchen.
* If you don't know how to use the windowpane test, no need to panic. Just knead the dough until it comes together and softens. The dough will no longer look shaggy and instead it will look smooth and a little shiny. You will be able to press you finger gently into the dough and it should slowly spring back into place.
Step 3: Make the Filling
While the dough rises, combine the reserved blueberries, remaining blueberry liquid, sugar, honey, lemon juice, orange juice, citrus zest, fresh blueberries, cornstarch, and salt in a saucepan.
Bring everything to a gentle simmer and cook for about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thickened into a rich, jam-like consistency.
Let the filling cool completely before spreading onto the dough. The cooler the filling, the easier your rolls will be to shape..
Step 4: Assemble the Rolls
Transfer the risen dough onto a lightly floured surface. Roll it into roughly a 12 × 18-inch rectangle, about ¼ inch thick.
Spread the cooled blueberry filling evenly over the dough, leaving about a ¼ inch border around the edges.
Starting with the long (18-inch) side, roll the dough into a tight log. A snug roll helps create those beautiful bakery-style swirls.
Step 5: Slice
Using a sharp knife, bench scraper, or unflavored dental floss, divide the log into 12 equal rolls.
Arrange them in a buttered 9×13-inch pan or divide between two 8×8-inch pans, leaving a little room between each roll.
Cover and let rise again until puffy and nearly doubled, about 1 hour.
Step 6: Bake
Preheat your oven to 350°F.
Bake for 25–30 minutes, until lightly golden and the centers register about 190–195°F. The edges should just begin pulling away from the pan.
Let the rolls cool for 15–20 minutes before frosting.
Step 7: Make the Frosting
If you haven't already, brown your butter ahead of time and let it cool until softened but no longer melted.
Beat together the browned butter and cream cheese until smooth. Add the powdered sugar, vanilla, citrus juices, and salt.
Mix until light, fluffy, and completely smooth.
Step 8: Frost & Enjoy
Spread the frosting over the rolls while they're still slightly warm if you love that soft, melty bakery-style frosting (my personal favorite).
If you prefer thicker, more defined swirls of frosting, let the rolls cool completely before spreading it on.
Either way...you really can't lose.
Now all that’s left to do is grab one before everyone else does. And maybe hide a second one for later.
